A Visit to Orkney, Scotland, May 2006
In May of 2006 I was in Scotland and took the train and ferry up to Orkney with the idea of
going to the 24th Orkney Folk
Festival and
to visit some of the amazing neolithic sites
that are in Orkney.
This is that same adventure!
Due to time constraints, and to spending my days in sessions during the festival instead of exploring the parts of Orkney that are not in pubs (!), I only ended-up exploring parts of The Mainland. That said, both the festival and what I did see of Orkney were truly fantastic, far exceeding my (already high!) expectations:
- The people are truly wonderful, warm, with the sweetest accent I've heard in the U.K. (although a little confusing with them changing "J" to "CH" and "Z" to "S" !).
- The festival was both professional and informal -- a tough combination -- with the venues that I attended (which were in Stromness ) cosy and fun.
- You get the sense of how deeply the music is a part of the people and the islands
- The weather is warmer and less rainy than other parts of Scotland!! [at least while I was there...]
Here are the photos and video that are my digital record of that
visit. If you have any questions, please
contact me.

of performers, where to stay, etc.).
